Veterans Memorial Needs Makeover

Detroit (WWJ)  -- U.S. Military Veterans have set themselves a mission of raising at least a quarter-million dollars to rehab the Michigan War Veterans Memorial at the State Fairgrounds in Detroit.

U.S. Air Force veteran Dick Chatman of Detroit explains that the Re-Light the Flame campaign will restore the located on State Fair at Woodward Avenue to its original 1939 appearance.

"Vandals have stolen some of the plaques; memorial plaques on it. And, um, we're trying to lead the efforts in raising 250-thousand dollars to restore that beautiful war memorial," Chatman said.

Chatman hopes numerous supporters will contribute to the Michigan War Memorial's restoration and re-lighting of the eternal flame. The flame went out in the 1950's.

Tax deductible contributions can be made to the Friends of the State Fair. A re-dedication ceremony is set for next fall.
