Top 5 Ways to Get the Most Mileage out of Your Car
1. Speeding, rapid acceleration and late braking all waste gas by lowering your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and 5 percent around town.
2. Take it easy on the freeways. Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. For each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.20 per gallon.
3. Remove all extra weight from your car. Every extra 100 pounds of weight typically reduces your gas mileage by 2-3 percent.
4. Do not sit in idle. Your car is burning gas but getting no mileage.
5. When you can, use overdrive gears. Overdrive gears improve the fuel economy of your car during highway driving. Your car’s engine speed decreases when you use overdrive, thus reducing fuel usage and engine wear.
