Detroit (WWJ) -- A Wayne County Circuit Court judge has ordered striking Wayne-Westland teachers back to class.
The order was issued late Thursday morning by Judge Kathleen MacDonald who did not order any disciplinary action.
District administrators accuse the union of violating Michigan's ban on teacher strikes. State law allows districts to fine teachers a day's pay for each day they're on strike and possibly fire them.
More than 800 teachers have been on strike since Monday affecting 13,000 students. Teachers have been without a contract since the beginning of the school year.
Union spokeswoman Melissa Sortman has said the teachers would comply with a court order.
Class size and benefits are two main issues. More negotiations are scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Fact finding was ordered.
The parties met for four-and-a-half hours Wednesday evening. The union gave a written package proposal to settle the contract. The district is expected to respond Thursday afternoon.
