Wayne State University and Eastern Michigan University Wednesday officially named new presidents, each of which will take office over the summer.
The Wayne State Board of Governors unanimously voted to appoint Jay Noren as the university's 10th president. At Eastern Michigan, the board of regents voted unanimously today to name Susan Martin as that school’s 22nd president.
Noren will begin his new position Aug. 1, succeeding Irvin D. Reid, who is stepping down after a decade at the helm of Wayne State. Martin, the school's first female president, will officially take office July 7. She replaces John Fallon, who was fired last July.
Before coming to Wayne State, Noren held leadership positions in higher education spanning a 36-year career. Recently, he was the founding dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Martin has, since July 2006, been provost and vice-chancellor of academic affairs at the University of Michigan – Dearborn.
