Voters Approve Zoo Millage

Royal Oak (WWJ)  -- Leaders of the Detroit Zoo called it an important day for the zoo's history.  Voters in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties overwhelmingly approved a special property tax millage to help fund operations at the Detroit Zoo.

The proposed 0.1-mill tax will add about $10 a year for the next decade to the property taxes on a home with a taxable value of $100,000. Taxable value is half or less of a home's market value.

Zoo Director Ron Kagan said he's grateful and the zoo is now on solid financial ground.

"This is about this community deserving a great zoo and the community saying this is what we want," Kagan told WWJ's Marie Osborne.

The 15 million dollars raised by the tax will be used for maintaining and operating the zoo.
