Volunteers Build Homes For Detroit Families

Detroit (WWJ)  -- They're helping Detroit families in need, one nail at a time.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting stopped by Friday to talk with volunteers working on a Habitat for Humanity building project on Waverly Street on Detroit's east side.

Habitat Detroit's Fund Director, Cindy Melican, says construction is already underway on three of five total homes being built through a partnership between Saturn Hands on Homes and Philadelphia Charitable Foundation.

Saturn's Mike Morreissey said it wasn't difficult to recruit workers for the project, "We had a great response from the Saturn team and also our colleagues throughout General Motors," he said.  "It's something that just feels like it's the right thing to do -- a chance to give back to the community." Moressy said.

Torei Perkins, a 27-year old mother of two, will move into one of the homes once she puts 240 hours of "sweat equity" into the project, and completes a home buying class.  Perkins (pictured at right) says she's really looking forward to owning her own home.

Habitat for Humanity Detroit brings together people from all walks of life to revitalize Detroit neighborhoods through the construction of decent affordable homes for local families in need.
