Using Technology To Capture The Community
Dr. Michael McVey Reporting

Using tools such as a word processor and a digital camera, you can engage a team of young learners in a community project.
A walk around the neighborhood or even around the school is an opportunity to photograph the art, the architecture, or the trees you walk past everyday. Include an art teacher, gardener, or a local historian on the walkabout, and students will learn many new and interesting details about their world.
Their finished product might become a booklet for the school or local library, a great visual presentation, or even a web page for your school’s site. A few technological tools can bring a new respect for both school and neighborhood.
Additional Tips:
- Consider interviewing local experts then seek assistance to convert the files into a podcast
- Be sure to seek permission from experts and neighbors if you are going to interview them
- If you do not know the history of any of the pieces of art you discover on your tour, consider writing fictitious short stories about the art and architecture you see
- Students might consider creating a tour of their neighborhood or schoolyard with suggestions on how to improve it one small piece at a time
- Students might also take photos of the trees and bushes in the area and explain what they are in their book
