Southfield (WWJ) -- On this September 11th, Oakland County officials are taking stock of their outdoor emergency warning system.
Mike Sturm, Administrator for Emergency Response and Preparedness in Oakland County said, effective immediately, Tornado Warning sirens will be sounded sooner than they were in the past.
"In the past, the sirens have only been activated when a tornado was spotted or it's actually noticed on radar by the National Weather Service," Sturm explained.
"But due to the effects of the damaging winds -- what we call straight-line winds -- we are changing the policy now and anytime winds reach a threshold of 70 miles an hour or more, we will activate our outdoor warning system," he said.
Severe weather sirens would also be activated within a 10-mile buffer zone of Oakland County.
According to the National Weather Service, if a 70 mile per hour requirement had been in place, Oakland County would have activated the sirens an additional half a dozen times since January 2006, instead of three times as occurred during that period of time.
