Detroit (WWJ/AP) -- Detroit's Economic Development Corp. has voted to recommend that Tiger Stadium be completely demolished if enough money can't be raised to save a portion of it.
An August 1 deadline has been set for a nonprofit group to raise funds to save part of the stadium. That's also when the city must tell the two companies contracted to demolish the ballpark whether any sections are to be saved.
“The vote does not change anything,” said Waymon Guillebeaux, vice president of contract services for the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, said in a statement. “The EDC simply voted appropriately to set up a final decision on the stadium by the Detroit City Council in time to meet our obligations to the demolition contractor.”
Tuesday's vote was taken to give the city council enough time to make a final decision on the issue. The council is expected to be on summer recess from the end of July until Aug. 8.
A spokesman for the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy says the vote is "premature'' and "unjustified.''
As part of the overall project plan, sections of the 9.5-acre site will become development parcels for mixed-use commercial and residential projects.
The ballpark opened as Navin Field in 1912, and closed in 1999. Demolition began last month.
