Thursday Classes Cancelled In Wayne-Westland District

Westland (WWJ)  -- Thousands of students who attend Wayne-Westland schools will have a fourth day off Thursday.

The district cancelled Thursday classes as a result of a teacher strike.  More than 800 teachers have been on strike since Monday.  They have been working without a contract.

Negotiations were taking place late Wednesday afternoon.  A mediator has been involved in the talks.

A principal at Stevenson Middle School left her job Wednesday.   A person answering the phone at district offices Wednesday afternoon said "no one was fired."  Union officials and district workers say the principal may have been forced to leave, either via early retirement or resignation, because she didn't give administrators the names of striking teachers.

Both sides will be in Wayne County Circuit Court Thursday morning at 11 a.m. as a judge will decide if teachers will be ordered back to work.

Benefits and class size are two of the major issues.
