Thoroughbred Racing Returns To Michigan

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Thoroughbred horse racing has returned to Metro Detroit. For horse racing fans who have been pining for the return of that Sport of Kings, the new Pinnacle Race Course in New Boston near Metro Airport is the only thoroughbred race course in Michigan.

It debuts the first contest on Friday, July 18 at 2:30 p.m.

Board chairperson Felicia Campbell told WWJ Newsradio 950's Pat Sweeting that community support has been great, "I think they're all excited for something new, "Campbell said.

"In the state right now there's not a lot of things that are booming, and brining something of interest." She said there is a lot of local interest and a lot of talk surrounding the sport.

Three year old males born and bred in Michigan will be on the track on Friday. The purse is $50,000 dollars.

About the Pinnacle Race Course

The course is located at 18000 Vining Road in Wayne County's Huron Township. Near New Boston and accessible from Sibley Road exit off Interstate 275.

Race schedule: Four days a week. Tuesday and Friday-Sunday in July and August; Monday-Tuesday and Friday-Saturday in September and October; and Sunday-Monday, Nov. 1-2.

When completed, Pinnacle Race Course will feature a four-story 60,000 sq. ft. clubhouse that includes private suites and boxes; 4,000-seat grandstand; 12,000 sq. ft. corporate pavilion (events/sportsbar/simulcasting and group sales venue), 8,000 sq. ft. covered patio; 30 barns; a 100-room grooms' quarters; jockey quarters; and, 1,200 horse stalls.

The course will feature two tracks, a one-mile dirt track and 7/8-mile turf (grass) track, created by world-renowned track designer Joseph H. King.  King has been involved in the design and construction of many of the major new or rebuilt racing facilities in North America during the last 30 years, including Pimlico Race Course, Emerald Downs, and Indiana Downs.
