The Competitions

DETROIT (WWJ)  -- In the days before live satellite sports coverage or even television, the Amateur Athletic Union would run track & field events in hundreds of locations across the country. Each event would "wire in" the results by telephone to tabulate results and determine the national winners.

Today, the top competitors come to one place: Southeast Michigan. With just about everything but curling, the AAU Junior Olympic Games cover 21 areas of sporting competition:

  • Baseball
  • Baton Twirling
  • Beach Volleyball
  • Boy's Basketball
  • Cheerleading
  • Dance
  • Field Hockey
  • Flag Football
  • Girls' Basketball
  • Gymnastics
  • Jump Rope
  • Karate
  • Multi-Events
  • Powerlifting
  • Swimming and Diving
  • Table Tennis
  • Taekwondo
  • Track & Field
  • Trampoline & Tumbling
  • Weightlifting
  • Wrestling
