Canton (WWJ) -- A Canton teen is facing explosive and terrorism-related charges after trying to derail a train.
Police arrested Ian Douglas after he allegedly set off a pipe bomb under a railroad overpass near I-275 and Haggerty Road Sunday.
Two witnesses told police Douglas pointed a shotgun at them on Sunday and, after asking for their identity, lit the bomb and said he was trying to derail a train.
Douglas has been charged with making a threat of terrorism, placing an explosive device near property and assault with a dangerous weapon. He could get 20 years in jail if convicted.
Police aren't sure why Douglas wanted to blow-up the overpass.
Douglas is jailed on a 500-thousand dollar bond. He's due back in court next week.

July 30, 2008, Canton, MI - Canton resident Ian Michael Douglas, 18, was arraigned yesterday in 35th District Court on five felony charges resulting from an incident that took place early Sunday morning at a railroad overpass near I-275 and Haggerty Road.
Two witnesses contacted Canton Police Department on Sunday after coming in contact with a man carrying a 12-guage shotgun near the overpass. The man approached the two individuals and pointed the shotgun at them asking their identity. They witnessed him igniting an explosive device (pipe bomb) on the ground under the overpass, and said he talked of plans to derail a train. The explosive device did not damage the overpass.
Canton police officers, with the assistance of the Western-Wayne Special Operations Team, MSP Bomb Squad, and CSX Railroad Police conducted the investigation. The suspect, Douglas, was identified and arrested. Police recovered bomb-making materials including pipes and powder used to make pipe bombs.
Douglas is being charged with:
Count 1- False Report or Threat of Terrorism, a 20-year felony
Count 2- Placing Explosives Near Property, a 15-year felony Count 3- Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, a 4-year felony (pointing gun at witness #1) Count 4- Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, a 4-year felony (pointing gun at witness #2) Count 5- Felony Firearm, a 2-year felony
Magistrate Eric Colthurst ordered a $500,000 cash bond for Douglas, and set his preliminary exam date for August 8, 2008 at 35th District Court in Plymouth. |
