Suspect Arraigned In Arson Fire That Killed Detroit Firefighter

Detroit (WWJ)  -- A 40-year old Detroit man has been arraigned on a charge of arson resulting in homicide in connection with a fire that claimed the life of a veteran firefighter.

Darian Dove was arraigned via videotape in 36th District Court.  He was in custody last month, but wasn't charged until Friday in the death of firefigher Walter Harris who died last November 15th when a roof of a vacant home collapsed on him.

Those close to the investigation say authorities waited to bring charges because they wanted to solidify their case.

Police investigators said at a Friday afternoon news conference they believe other individuals are involved in the case that was started in a home on Kirby Street near Sheridan on the city's eastside.

One of Harris' close friends Lt. Steve Kirschner said Friday the firefighters at Engine 23 have missed Harris "immensely."

"This helps to bring some closure to us out in the field," Kirschner said early Friday afternoon before he headed to the news conference.  "It gives us a little bit of piece of mind."

Still, Lt. Kirschner said the arrest doesn't bring him (Harris) back.

"We just learn to live with his loss, and you learn to live without him being there just as his family has to and that's the saddest thing."

Harris left behind a wife and six children.  One son is a Detroit firefighter.
