East Lansing (WWJ) -- Are heavier people 'lazier' in the workplace than their slimmer counterparts?
Not according to a new study from Michigan State University. The research finds that overweight people are just as effective in the workplace. Researchers say the study refutes stereotypical ideas that overweight workers are more likely to be lazy, moody or non-cooperative.
The study was conducted, in part, to draw attention to a little-known Michigan law that makes obesity discrimination in the workplace illegal.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 28-percent of Michigan residents were considered obese, while 36-percent were considered overweight.
