Splash Your Way to Better Health this Summer

Do you suffer from arthritis or another potentially painful condition? Or are you simply looking for a way to exercise that’s fun and not too hard on your body?  Look no further – water aerobics might be your answer. It’s a refreshing way to keep active this summer – and Health Alliance Plan is makes it easy by offering free classes for seniors.

Beginning in June, HAP will offer its popular “Senior Splash Bash” water aerobics classes in nine Southeast Michigan communities. The classes are FREE and open to the public.

Four years ago, when we launched our inaugural water aerobics class, we didn’t expect the program to be as popular as it has grown to be today,” said Chrystal Roberts, director of community relations at HAP. “Participants across metro Detroit are so pleased with the program that they have asked us to bring it back for another season.”

Participating Locations:

• Clinton Township: Clintondale Middle School
• Detroit: Coleman Young, Patton, and Williams Recreation Centers
• Flint: University of Michigan-Flint Recreation Center (NEW LOCATION)
• Marine City: Marine City High School
• Southfield: Municipal Complex
• Trenton: Kennedy Aquatic Center (NEW LOCATION)
• Troy: Indoor Municipal Pool
• Warren: Community Center
• Westland: Bailey Recreation Center

Water aerobics offers a low-impact, calorie burning workout that can be ideal for people with arthritis or other chronic conditions because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on joints, bones and muscles.

More than 2,600 adults, on average, participate in the program each year.

A recent survey conducted by the Clinton Township Parks and Recreation Department revealed that 81 percent of Senior Splash Bash participants indicated that they had improved stamina, increased muscle tone, decreased body fat, made new friends, and increased self confidence as a result of their participation in the water aerobics program.

So, whatever your shape or reason, grab your suit and head to the pool for a free aerobic workout! You’ll feel better and your body will thank you.
