Southfield Mayor Announces Candidacy

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Brenda Lawrence, the Mayor of Southfield, has announced her campaign to unseat longtime Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. The 53-year-old Democrat said she knows it will be a tough race, but it’s one she can win.

“I am not stepping up to this mic to place," Lawrence said. "I am stepping up with the compassion, commitment, rolling my selves up today. We’re going to win this race, and we’re going to take Oakland County.”

Lawrence said her campaign will be driven on her strong record of public service. Her resume includes the Southfield School Board and City Council. Her platform embraces diversity, inclusion, doing more with less and increasing the region’s mobility with an effective public transit system.

“I was glad to see that now there’s a proposal on the table to take a rail from Detroit to Eight Mile Road and Woodward Avenue. It would be wonderful to continue that,” she said.

Brooks Patterson has been the County Executive for 16 years. He is expected to file for candidacy Monday, just ahead of the Tuesday deadline.
