Secretaries of State from around the nation are meeting in Grand Rapids Wednesday. One of the items on the agenda: a major re-haul of how the United States will hold its presidential primaries. They'll discuss a plan to take primary voting out of the hands of separate states.
Instead, Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land says, the nation would be divided into four regions. "They'd have the opportunity for each region to take a chance to go first and they'd start maybe in March and then two or three weeks later another region," said Land.
According to Land, it would be great for the candidates because they could work one region of the country at a time, get an opportunity to have town hall meetings, meet the voters, and give voters the opportunity to meet them. The new plan could also help alleviate some campaign debt.
"We think that it has some great pluses," said Land, "so we're hoping that folks will take a look at it."
