Saginaw Woman Wins Green House From HGTV

A "completely overwhelmed" Kari Coffey shook with joy when learned she was the winner of the second annual HGTV Green Home located in Tradition, Fla.

Coffey, a 37-year old laboratory assistant from Saginaw, had put her 4-year-old daughter to bed and retired for the evening with her husband Mike when HGTV's Chi-Lan Lieu knocked on her door to announce that she won the 2009 HGTV Green Home Giveaway grand-prize package valued at approximately $750,000.

Coffey's excitement at receiving the news was televised on the HGTV Green Home Giveaway 2009 special on Sunday, June 28 at 8 p.m.

"I am overwhelmed right now," said a shaky Coffey. "Completely overwhelmed!"

Coffey, whose name was drawn from nearly 17 million entries, is from a family of HGTV fans. Her grand-prize package includes the new, eco-friendly and fully furnished contemporary Spanish-style home situated in Tradition, Fla. and a 2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid. Coffey said she is thrilled about the warm Florida location and the fact that the home is green.

"My daughter wants to recycle because she learns about it at school. We've switched to the CFLs (compact florescent lights), but we're excited about learning new ways to be green from the home," she said.

Located near Port St. Lucie, Fla., the HGTV Green Home includes three bedrooms and two and a half baths and features both construction and design elements that are known to contribute to an energy efficient, cleaner and even healthier living environment. The home received a Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification and earned the Indoor airPLUS label from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

"Tradition, Florida was the perfect community for our second annual HGTV Green Home Giveaway," said Jim Samples, president of HGTV. "We wanted a community in a desirable location that showcases how you can live responsibly without compromising design aesthetics or modern amenities. The response to this year's giveaway indicates that we were successful."

The HGTV Green Home Giveaway complements the network's annual HGTV Dream Home Giveaway, one of the most successful consumer promotions in cable TV history. The HGTV Green Home Giveaway 2009 involves sponsorship from several national advertisers including: General Motors Corporation, Shaw Industries Inc., Sears, Roebuck and Co., Kohler Co., S.C. Johnson & Son Inc., CaesarStone US, The Sherwin-Williams Company and Huhtamaki Food Service Inc. Additional information and official rules are available at HGTV.com.
