Safety Tips For Oxygen Therapy Users

If you or someone you’re caring for is prescribed oxygen therapy, there are some important safety tips you should follow.  While oxygen does not explode or burn by itself, it will quickly feed a fire should one occur.

Here are is a list of safety tips from Henry Ford Health Products , a provider of oxygen and respiratory products:

1) Do not allow smoking or the use of any open flames near the oxygen.  This includes cooking over a gas stove, using a candle, or anything that involves a flame or fire.  Do not store the oxygen near any flame.

2) Do not store oxygen near radiators, space heaters, heat ducts, steam pipes or any source of heat.

3) Do not use electric equipment (electric razors, electric blankets, heating pads, etc.) within five feet of the oxygen source.

4) Do not leave cylinders in a closed car during warm weather.

5) Do not use any oily, petroleum-based products while receiving oxygen.  Use only water-soluble products, like K-Y Jelly.

6) Do not use aerosol sprays in the vicinity of oxygen equipment.

7) Do not put oil or grease on or near the oxygen equipment.

8) Do not set liquids or food on top of the oxygen concentrator.

9) Do not block the inlet/outlet filters.

10)  Do post the warning sign stating that oxygen is in use.

11)  Do have an all-purpose fire extinguisher available.

12)  Do store cylinders securely so they can’t tip over.

Important note: This list is not meant to be comprehensive – be sure to follow all safety rules given to you by your medical equipment provider.
