Roger Sweet Charged with Murder

Detroit (WWJ)  -- A 60-year-old man already sentenced to prison for making child pornography has been sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison for the 1990 murder of his wife. Roger Sweet of Wayne County's Brownstown Township was sentenced Tuesday in Oakland County Circuit Court.  He pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the 1990 slaying of his wife Marlene Sweet.

The case was reopened after Roger Sweet's second wife, Lizzie Mae Collier-Sweet, went missing around the time of a Jan. 8, 2007 fire at the couple's Brownstown Township home. An autopsy report on Marlene Sweet reveaked that she had suffered severe head trauma. Police are still searching for Collier-Sweet's body. They have been unlucky thus far.

Roger Sweet was sentenced in an unrelated federal case earlier this month to 21 years and 10 months in prison. Prosecutors say he produced pornography using a 16-year-old mentally disabled girl. He also was sentenced in Wayne County court to 10 to 17 years on related sex-assault charges. Sweet will serve concurrent sentences in federal prison.
