Project Guardian Targets Child Abusers

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Wayne County Sheriff's deputies were going door-to-door on Friday, paying surprise visits to the homes of convicted child abusers who are still on parole.

It's all part of Project Guardian, which is just beginning its second year. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy explained the reason behind the effort:

" None of us want to see the story when you see someone arrested for a sever case of child abuse, and we didn't dig back into the background, and see that this person was a probationer or parolee with serious child abuse in their background." Worthy said.

"None of us want to see that, and that is what sparked this effort," she said.

Sheriffs deputies have already visited the homes of 200 child abusers still on parole or probation. Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans says the visit do  paying off. "A guy who had been to prison for first degree criminal sexual conduct -- one of those people who was not supposed to be living with small children -- was with a new girlfriend with four children. So, we removed him from that situation," Evans said.

The State of Michigan, and other local and federal agencies are involved in the initiative.
