Rankings List Michigan's Child Health Services Among Best in Nation
Two recent rankings show that Michigan has among the best children’s health care systems in the country.
Earlier this week, Michigan was named as a top-quartile state in a ranking of children’s health care performance released by The Commonwealth Fund, a New York-based private foundation that aims to promote a high-performing health care system.
That ranking follows closely behind the U.S.News & World Report 2008 "America’s Best Children’s Hospitals" list, which included DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit and C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor.
The Commonwealth Fund ranking focuses on 13 indicators of child health system performance including access, quality, costs, and the potential to lead healthy lives.
Michigan is tied with Rhode Island as no. 3 for the best access to health care for children. The report says Michigan has the lowest uninsured rate for children in the country at 5.2 percent (130,000) meaning 94.8 percent (2.4 million children) are insured in Michigan. The report also names our state as among seven deemed to be "national leaders in giving children access to care and ensuring high quality care."
The Commonwealth Fund report ranks Michigan no. 12 nationwide in overall performance, no. 15 in terms of quality and no. 17 in terms of equity.
The U.S. News & World Report list ranked each pediatric hospital in seven pediatric specialties: cancer, digestive disorders, heart and heart surgery, neonatal care, neurology and neurosurgery, respiratory disorders, and general pediatrics. Children’s Hospital of Michigan was recognized for cancer, neurology and neurosurgery. C.S. Mott was nationally ranked in all seven specialties.
Unlike its 2007 pediatric ranking, this year’s “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” feature lists only the 30 top ranked hospitals in each specialty. It no longer includes an overall pediatric ranking.
