Detroit (WWJ) -- Drivers heading into and out of downtown Detroit via I-96 will have new pavement to drive on Monday morning.
The Michigan Department of Transportation says a portion of the I-96 portion of the Gateway Project has been completed early. I-96, between Rosa Parks Blvd and I-94 in both directions is now open.
MDOT spokeswoman Brenda Peek says motorists may encounter a few construction barrels along the way and road crews put the finishing touches on the road construction project.
The road work affected 90-thousand drivers who use that stretch of freeway each day. The section re-opened about a month early.
The I-75 portion of the Gateway Project remains closed to traffic from Rosa Parks to Clark Street in southwest Detroit. It is expected to remain closed until late 2009.
