Southfield (WWJ) -- Just days after Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence announced she'll run for Oakland County Executive, current Executive L. Brooks Patterson announced he'll seek another four-year term.
The filing deadline for candidates seeking public offices is Tuesday afternoon.
"While I'm extremely pleased with the many successes my administration has had over the past 16 years in spearheading economic development, enhancing quality of life and creating career and business opportunities, more can be done to solidify Oakland County's position as a major player in the new economy of the 21st Century," Patterson said in a statement. "I would like the opportunity to finish that job."
Among the accomplishments Patterson's campaign highlighted in announcing re-election was his founding of Automation Alley in 1998 as a way to "leverage the combined strength of cutting edge local companies into a national marketing consortium that could compete with other high-tech powerhouses like Silicon Valley, Boston's Route 128 and Research Park Triangle in North Carolina."
Automation Alley is in eight counties with more than 900 companies.
In addition, Patterson established the Emerging Sectors program to replace manufacturing jobs that were lost in auto industry cuts.
Patterson initiated Wireless Oakland, however the plan for "free" internet service has been slowed by the economy.
Lawrence said last Friday her campaign will be driven on her past experience and she'll push to improve mass transit and prevent sprawl.
The primary election will be held on August 5th. The general election is November 4th. |
