Pancake Mix Killer Faces Life

SAGINAW (AP)  -- A 21-year-old who authorities say killed two men after trying to pass off pancake mix as cocaine in Saginaw has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Matthew Deshone didn't speak during Thursday's sentencing, but maintains his innocence. He was found guilty of first-degree murder in the November 2005 deaths of Demario Sherman and Franscoir Shepherd.

Authorities say Deshone and 24-year-old Joseph Villarreal had gone to Sherman's apartment to sell him an ounce of dry pancake mix when Sherman made a sudden move and a skittish Deshone shot him.

Authorities say Deshone later fatally shot Shepherd, who overheard him discussing the failed deal. Villarreal pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced last month to 12 to 30 years.
