Southfield (WWJ) -- Opening day at the new Pinnacle Race Course in southwestern Wayne County saw an overflow crowd of more than ten-thousand people.
There were so many people headed to the track that Huron Township police had officers working traffic control. One WWJ listener drove away from the course after waiting for, what he said, was more than an hour and running into closed roads.
Thoroughbred horse racing started about 3 p.m. Friday at the course along Vining Road. Equally Good with jockey Ricardo Barrios won the first race.
The weekend schedule calls for racing from 2:30 – 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 - 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
The inaugural season includes 63 days of racing through November 2nd, with racing beginning at 2:30 p.m. every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, and at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Click here for more details.
Parking and admission are free for the inaugural season.
Although racing has started, construction crews will continue to build grandstands, restaurants and barns.
