NWA Loses $377M in 2Q

Eagan, MN (AP)  -- Northwest Airlines Corp. says it lost $377 million in the second quarter as fuel expenses continue to rise sharply.

Michigan's largest passenger air carrier lost $1.43 per share on revenue of $3.58 billion. During the same period last year, when Northwest emerged from bankruptcy protection, it made a profit of $2.15 billion, including $1.94 billion in bankruptcy items. It would have made $273 million a year ago without bankruptcy items.

Northwest says it would have earned $170 million for the most recent quarter if not for a non-cash accounting charge of $547 million.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial forecast a loss of 54 cents per share on revenue of $3.44 billion.
Analysts do not generally include one-time items.
