Michigan Kids Learn To Report Predators

ROYAL OAK (WWJ)  -- More Michigan kids are learning how to keep safe on the Internet. The Michigan Cyber Initiative, a state program, has been recognized for its efforts in keeping kids safe from Internet predators.

State Attorney General Mike Cox kicked off the program last fall and it's been presented to more than 200,000 children in kindergarten through 8th grade."We know kids don't tell us everything, but they walk with more tools. And better able to talk to their parents; and parents better able to talk to their children." Cox said.

He says no arrest have resulted from this, but some kids have reported predators and cyber bullies."We had a girl Downriver who, an older man, got her phone number and kept calling -- an adult man," Cox said. "So the school district and the parents intervened and prevented what could have been a very bad situation."

Tuesday, Cox was presented the "Internet Keep Safe Award" from iKeepSafe, a national Internet safety organization.

Cox says they'd like expand the program to reach 300,000 kids next year.
