Metro Detroiters Travel For Pope's First Papal Visit to U.S.

Southfield (WWJ)  -- As Pope Benedict makes his way to the U.S. for his first papal visit, about 400 Metro Detroiters including Archbishop of Detroit, Cardinal Adam Maida, are preparing to fly out to see the Pope in Washington and New York.

Victoria Beck, a Pastoral Minister at Saint Constance Parish in Taylor, is very excited about the trip. She tells WWJ's Chrystal Knight it will be a very moving experience to attend a mass led by the Pope -- and to see all the people there who "believe in God, who believe in hope and believe that there is a better way to live." Beck says she's preparing for the trip with prayer, reflection and thinking about the many challenges Christians face. She's planning to attend a special mass with the Pope at Yankee Stadium.

President Bush will be welcoming Pope Benedict in visit to the United States. Pope Benedict says the sexual abuse scandal involving Roman Catholic clergy in the U.S. has left him ``deeply ashamed.'' He's pledging to work to keep pedophiles out of the priesthood. Benedict spoke to reporters on board his plane while on his way to Washington.
