Metro Airport Probed Over Flight Maneuvers

Newark, NJ (AP)  -- Federal authorities have investigated Detroit Metropolitan Airport and other U.S. airports for a routine flight maneuver that some see as a safety risk.

A "go-around'' procedure -- when an incoming plane pulls up during landing at the last minute and circles around -- was discontinued at Metro this spring.  Air traffic controllers warned it was putting planes directly into the path of departing planes from another runway.

An Associated Press review of data from eight of the nation's busiest airports found more than 1,500 go-arounds during the last six months of 2007.  Controllers worry a deadly accident could result, though there have only been close calls so far.

The FAA says it's looking at its procedures but the public is in no immediate danger.
