Meijer Recalling Hamburger, Ground Beef

Southfield (WWJ)  -- Meijer is voluntarily recalling fresh hamburger and fresh ground beef sold in its stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.

The Grand Rapids-based company says the recall follows an expanded recall from the JBS Swift Beef Company.

No illnesses have been linked to the hamburger and ground beef and the company says the product has not been identified as contaminated.

The recall involves the following items:

FRESH HAMBURGER - UPC 20165500000 with "sell by" dates of
April 26, 2009-June 19, 2009 and "freeze/use by" dates of
April 27, 2009-June 20, 2009 (Michigan stores only)

and

FRESH GROUND BEEF - UPC 201668000 with "sell by" dates of
April 26, 2009-June 19, 2009 and "freeze/use by" dates of
April 27, 2009-June 20, 2009  (stores in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky)

Customers who have the products should throw it out or return it to any Meijer location for a full refund.  If Meijer customers are unsure if they have the recalled product, they can call the Meijer customer contact center at 800-543-3704.

Earlier this month, health departments in Michigan and eight other states reported 23 illnesses from E. Coli bacteria linked to JBS Swift Beef Company.  Six of the illnesses were in Michigan.

More than 420,000 pounds of beef have been recalled.

For further information on preparing ground beef for safe consumption and handling contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854 or click here.
