Did you know that if you have diabetes you might qualify for therapeutic shoes or inserts?
Many diabetics suffer from poor circulation that can lead to foot sores and ulcers, decreased sensitivity, pain, and in severe cases, amputation of the foot or leg. Wearing special shoes or inserts can help prevent initial sores from developing.
If you have Medicare Part B and suffer from diabetes, and you meet certain criteria, you may be eligible for coverage of therapeutic footwear. In order to qualify, you must have at least one of the following conditions in one or both feet:
• Partial or complete foot amputation
• Past foot ulcers
• Calluses that could lead to foot ulcers
• Nerve damage due to diabetes, with sign of problems with calluses
• Poor circulation
• Deformed feet
You must also be under a comprehensive diabetes care plan and need therapeutic footwear because of diabetes. A doctor has to prescribe the shoes, and a doctor or qualified specialist must fit and provide the shoes.
