Mayor's Stimulus Package Slammed

Detroit City Council President Ken Cockrel, Jr. says they can't afford Mayor Kilpatricks's proposed economic stimulus package.  The plan calls for selling $360-million in bonds to cover the cost of several public works projects including new buildings for police and fire and demolishing large abandoned buildings.   Cockrel says the idea is equivalent to financing over $300-million worth of work on a credit card.

The mayor's office says Cockrel has been quick to criticize the Package, but hasn’t offered any viable alternatives.  They say they provided President Cockrel and his colleagues plenty of time to offer their suggestions about the plan, but unfortunately they’ve focused their attention on political posturing instead the needs of our citizens.
