Making Transitions: Middle School & 9th Grade

Transition to Middle School

For parents of children moving from elementary to middle school, September can be a difficult month. Most 5th grade students are in elementary school buildings, with one teacher. But in a middle school, your student might have as many as 5 or 6 teachers, each assigning work and tests in a different subject.

Middle school is a good time to talk to your child about how to manage their new complex world, and to encourage him or her to set and work toward academic goals. It is also an age when many students stop telling parents about school, so you may have to work extra hard to get the real story of how things are going in school.

Transition to 9th Grade

For many students, moving into 9th grade is like the start of a game of chess. If students are able to have a good start to the year, they are able to pass their classes, move on to 10th grade, and have a smooth path to graduation. But if students do not have a good start, they find themselves in immediate difficulty -- possibly ending the game before it has started.

For parents, the transition to high school is a good time to make sure that students are attending their classes, handing in their work, and surrounded by encouraging and positive influences.
