Making a Book!

If you have access to a word processor and a printer, then you can help even the youngest of learners create their own books.

Have your young writer dictate a story to you and print each sentence at the top of the page. Make sure the letters are large and leave plenty of space at the bottom of the page to use paint, crayons, or magazine clippings to illustrate the story.

Bind the pages together with some sturdy paper for the front and back cover. Be sure to use ribbon or twine so the book is safe to handle.

You will have a treasured book to share with your child.

Additional Tips:
  • Keep the story simple
  • Use your child’s words
  • Leave up to three quarters of the page free for illustrations
  • You may need to use some story starters to get the ball rolling (Once upon a time… My best friend… My favorite toys… My pet… My neighborhood… etc.)
  • Be sure to save the file in case you have to print a single sheet
