MGM Grand Detroit has received the Development of the Year 2007 award from the 2008 Americas Lodging Investment Summit held last month in Los Angeles.
The $800 million MGM Grand was the only one of the three Detroit casino/hotels to build an entirely new facility. The complex includes 30,000 square feet of meeting and convention space and 400 hotel rooms, including nine rooftop VIP suites and 56 corner suites. It also has three restaurants from Chefs Wolfgang Puck and Michael Mina and a resort-style spa. The meeting space includes three 1,600-square-foot meeting rooms and two 710-square-foot executive boardrooms.
Summit sponsors picked MGM Grand from a list if three finalists. The finalists had been selected by the ALIS nomination committee from a pool of 30 nominees. The event was co-hosted by the American Hotel & Lodging Association and the Burba Hotel Network.
Opened in October, MGM Grand Detroit was named as one of the "Top 10 new U.S. hotels of 2007" by the Gayot restaurant and travel guide. It also was mentioned as a key attraction in a New York Times article that named Detroit one of "53 places to visit in 2008.” The MGM’s Saltwater restaurant was named "Restaurant of the Year" by the Detroit Free Press.
