Leaders React To News of Mayor Jailed

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sent to the Wayne County jail on Thursday, Aug. 7, by a 36th District Court judge after the mayor admitted to violating his bond conditions by traveling to Canada.

WWJ Newsradio 950 has been speaking with local leaders who are reacting to the news.

Oakland County Executive L Brooks Patterson, who has been guarded with his comments in the past, now says enough is enough, "It's going to be broadcast all around the world, and it's one more blow that the city of Detroit should not have to take. And, for that matter, it involves in a negative way, the image of the entire region."

Patterson said it's time for Kilpatrick to do what's best for the city, "This story's not going to have a happy ending for the mayor, and I think he ought to move it up and make a decision to step aside for the best interest of the city he professes he loves."

WWJ has learned that Detroit Deputy Mayor, Kandia Milton, will be taking over the mayor's duties while Kilpatrick remains behind bars.  City Council President Ken Cochrel would take over if Mayor Kilpatrick ultimately decides to resign.

Speaking live on WWJ, Cochrel said he would succeed Kilpatrick if the mayor resigns or is forced from office, and also offered his reaction to Thursday's bombshell from the courtroom. "The first reaction is, it's a very sad day in the city of Detroit, and it's very unfortunate. This is another unfortunate chapter in what has been a very long and painful saga for the city of Detroit. And I hope it's one that we can bring to a close soon, because we need to."

Cockrell said the City Council will hold a session on Friday, to talk about the growing crisis in the city.

Detroit Renaissance released an official statement regarding Thursday's events: "The situation involving the mayor of Detroit is disruptive and a distraction to the work many of us are doing to redevelop this city. However, there are political and legal processes underway that are addressing this issue, which we are seeing take place right now. While we hope this matter can be resolved quickly, we have to respect these processes."

In her official statement, Congresswoman Candice Miller said enough is enough: "It is long past time for Mayor Kilpatrick to resign for the good of the city, the region and our state. ... At a time when the eyes of the world are on our state for the PGA Championship, and we should be showing off everything that is great about our Michigan, the focus instead will be on the mayor who continues to sully our reputation and harm the efforts of hard working individuals trying to lift Michigan. This is a national embarrassment"

Senator Carl Levin, D-Mich., said the following: “These are deeply troubling times for the people of Detroit.  A prompt resolution of the legal issues surrounding the mayor is essential so the city can focus on its future without this distraction.”

Wayne Country Prosecutor Kym Worthy also released a statement: "I think it was most appropriate for Judge Giles to take action regarding Defendant Kilpatrick’s bond considering his most recent behavior.  Judge Giles treated this defendant as any other defendant would have been treated."
