Lawrence Technological University is introducing 35 new “Reinvent Your Career” certificate programs that will position graduates for employment opportunities in emerging areas of the Michigan economy, including video and film production. It is the largest launch of new programs in the university’s 77-year history.
This summer the university introduced three certificate programs to prepare graduates for jobs in the movie industry and will introduce three more for the fall semester that begins Aug. 26.
To help introduce these new certificate programs, Lawrence Tech is sponsoring CBS Radio Detroit’s “Michigan Makes Movies Expo” at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi Sunday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“Lawrence Tech is aggressively developing new certificates that aim to help people retool their educational backgrounds for growing areas of the economy,” said Lawrence Tech President Lewis N. Walker. “Even more good news is that tuition can be virtually free for displaced workers, thanks to a combination of tuition aid from the university and special state and federal grants.”
Lawrence Tech’s Recovery Starts Here program provides grants that cover 50 percent of the tuition for 400 displaced workers or their dependent children who qualify for admission to an academic program. The state’s No Worker Left Behind program provides up to two years’ worth of free tuition for unemployed workers to pursue a degree or certificate in a high-demand occupation or emerging industry. And federal assistance is available through the Trade Adjustment Assistance program.
Tax incentives for the film industry are expected to generate thousands of new jobs in Michigan in the next few years, and this summer Lawrence Tech added three undergraduate certificate programs, Animation and Visual Effects for Film, Film and Production Techniques, and Set Design.
Three more will be introduced for the fall semester: Television and Video Production, Film and Audio Technique, and Video and Audio Technique.
Registration is now open for the new certificate programs being introduced in the fall semester that starts Aug. 26. For more information, contact the admissions office at (800) CALL-LTU ext. 1 or
