Dearborn (WWJ/AP) -- King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is visiting Michigan as part of a green energy push.
The figurehead monarch appeared with Governor Jennifer Granholm on Friday at an energy seminar in Dearborn.
Gustaf told the gathering climate change is ``one of the greatest challenges the world has faced.''
MEDC Chairman Jim Epolito was also there, and said Sweden is way ahead of the world in finding alternatives to conventional oil. "They don't use fossil fuel to heat their homes. They have municipal facilities that they use, local power plants, that don't use fossil fuel," Epolito said.
"We are way too reliant and now we're turning in that direction. And Michigan is going to lead the United States in this area," he said.
Gustaf later appeared at Kettering University in Flint for a ceremonial groundbreaking for a proposed biogas facility. Plans are in the works to build the facility in Flint that will turn sewer and toilet water into fuel for cars.
Gustaf reportedly planned to meet Saturday with Swedish members of the Detroit Red Wings.
