Kettering University in Flint announced both its annual fall open house and mathematics Olympiad Thursday.

Kettering's Open House will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at its campus.

“Discover Kettering” is open to anyone wanting to see how Kettering takes hands-on learning to the next level, said Frank Hribar, vice president for Enrollment Services. Kettering has some of the best engineering facilities available to undergraduates in the world, Hribar explained. “Our faculty will be in the classrooms and labs, ready to talk to students and parents who want to experience the campus during our Discover Kettering open house," he said. "You’ll have an opportunity to discuss Kettering’s world-class co-op program, majors, minors, and academic concentrations, such as computer gaming and system and date security. Kettering’s new Pre-Med program will be featured, too.”

Breakfast starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by a welcome to all participants at 10 a.m. Guests attending “Discover Kettering” on Nov. 8 will see Kettering’s Crash Safety Center, the Fuel Cell Center, and labs in acoustics, lasers and a wind tunnel.

Prospective students and their families will have a chance to meet current faculty and students, tour campus facilities and find out more about the Kettering advantage of a real-world education coupled with real-world job experience.

A highlight of the day will be an Academic Expo from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A separate Kettering University Expo from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. will allow families to learn more about student life, including the residence hall and recreation center, and Flint. Students can meet with admissions, co-op and financial aid representatives. A panel of current Kettering students will tell stories about their class and job experiences. A special session is offered for transfer students.

Kettering also announced that one of Michigan’s best math students will win a full-tuition, 4½-year scholarship to the nationally ranked engineering, mathematics, science and business school Kettering University in Flint during the Kettering University Mathematics Olympiad on Saturday, Nov. 22. Other prizes, including a $1,000 gift certificate from Best Buy, will also be awarded during the event on Kettering’s campus on the corner of University and Chevrolet avenues in Flint.

Joe Salacuse, professor of mathematics, said Kettering’s Mathematics Olympiad is a competition designed to identify and encourage students with interests and abilities in mathematics.

The eighth annual competition consists of four to six challenging problems to be solved within a time limit of four hours. The problems range from "mind-benders" that require little mathematical skills to problems that require the knowledge of geometry, trigonometry and beginning calculus.  No calculators are permitted for this competition.
