House Demolished Following Firefighter Death

Detroit (WWJ)  -- An eastside home where Detroit firefighter Walter Harris died was demolished Wednesday.

Several members of Harris' firehouse and his family watched at Kirby Street near Van Dyke and Gratiot as the abandoned home was destroye.

Harris died last month when the roof collapsed on him. Four other firefighters were injured

On the side of the building someone posted a sign that read "Person who set this fire is a murderer and coward." Below it is another sign offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the deadly fire.

On hand to watch the demolition, one of the late firefighter's sons, Patrick Harris, said this one building won't be  enough. "It feels good. I don't want it to stop here, though. I want every abandoned house, everywhere, to be torn down so this situation doesn't happen again," he said.

Harris was the first Detroit firefighter to die while fighting a fire in six years.

"Hopefully it will bring closure for a lot of the guys who are still having issues with this," Deputy Detroit Fire Chief Edward Smith said about the demolition. "We're going to miss him," he said.
