High Gas Prices Spur Penny-Pinching

As gas prices flirt with the $4 a gallon mark, drivers are looking to cut corners wherever they can.

Carolyn Johnson of West Bloomfield works in Lansing, but she recently cut her gas costs by signing up for Michivan, a car pool-type service to ride to work.  "I was paying something like $180 a week for gas and now it's cut down so much," she said.  Johnson told WWJ's Karen Dinkins that her MichiVan tab is about $200/month.

People who drive RNs and campers are getting help too--from the state.  Worried that high gas prices will force people to leave their vacation vehicles home, the
Michigan Department of Natural Resources says you'll be able to park at some state parks and recreation areas for free--for up to 15 days.  It's first-come-first-served.  Campground reservations are down more than three percent compared to last year.

And some people are just getting new vehicles altogether.  At Biker Bob's Harley dealership in Taylor, General Manager Jason Breckridge told WWJ's Ron Dewey that they've been taking some interesting trade-ins for motorcycles, including SUV's, boats, Jet-Skis, even a Corvette.

Breckenridge said people who have been on the fence about getting a motorcycle are now coming in.  "Some people look at it as a hobby, a lifestyle or a mode of transportation, we'll take anything in on trade as long as we don't have to feed it." he said.
