Having the Talk: Computer Ethics

As a parent, you’re expected to have a number or serious talks with your child.  Make sure you set aside time to talk with you children about responsible use of the Internet.

Most of the principals you have already taught your children are applicable to your child’s use of the Internet.  Just as you would teach your children not to give his or her house key to a stranger, teach them not to give out their passwords to anyone you haven’t approved.

You have taught your children that stealing is wrong; make sure they know that computer hacking and taking other people’s work off of the Internet without permission is wrong.  Your children most likely follow the golden rule; apply that to Internet use, and your children will know not to hurt others by posting negative things about others on the Internet or sending out computer viruses.

And, just as you’ve taught your children to stay away from people and situations that make them feel uncomfortable, they should stay away from chat rooms, web sites, and people that make them feel uncomfortable.

Having any one of “the talks” can be daunting for parents, but if you take a few minutes to sit down with your children and use what you’ve already taught them, you will be better able to keep your children safe while using the World Wide Web!
