Hand Washing Basics

If you talk to your child about hand-washing, you can teach your kids about the dangers of bacteria and viruses, and help them stay well at the same time.  Help stop the spread of germs by teaching your children proper hand-washing techniques.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children should wash their hands after touching something that could be contaminated, after using the restroom, before eating, when they look dirty, and before, during, and after handling and eating food.  When washing their hands, kids should wet them, apply soap, rub their hands together for 20 full seconds, rinse, and dry.

To ensure your kids are washing for the entire 20 seconds, here’s a quick tip.  Pick one of your favorite nursery rhymes or songs that take about 20 seconds to recite or sing and have your kids sing out loud while they wash their hands.
