Granholm Signs 2 Energy Bills

Detroit (WWJ)  -- A change in the way Michigan regulates electric utilities and pushes the development of alternative energy such as wind power has been approved by lawmakers.

The changes were backed by Governor Jennifer Granholm, "The signing of this legislation today is the first step in significant transformation of Michigan," she said.

Governor Jennifer Granholm signed the two energy bills Monday. The Governor sees it as a way to encourage the growth of alternative energy in Michigan, along with jobs related to renewable energy industries such as wind power.

"It means jobs for those who will be actually assembling wind turbines. It means jobs for those who will be transporting those wind turbines," Governor Granholm said.

The bills call for the state to increase its use of alternative energy to 10 percent of the total power output by 2015.
