Governor Sets Removal Hearing For September

Lansing (WWJ)  -- Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm will hold a hearing on a Detroit City Council request to remove Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from office September 3 at 9 a.m. in Detroit.

WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick says the announcement Thursday shows Granholm intends to follow through with the hearing.  Earlier the governor said she would hold a hearing only if necessary.

The Detroit City Council has asked Granholm to remove Kilpatrick from office for misconduct.

Michigan law allows a governor to remove an elected official for misconduct.  In Kilpatrick's case, the council listed several reasons, including his handling of an $8.4 million settlement in a whistle-blowers' lawsuit.

Spokeswoman Liz Boyd says the governor will not offer any reaction to ongoing criminal matters involving Kilpatrick.

The mayor was sent to jail Thursday morning for violating his bond.  Click here for more on that story.
