Gov Disappointed In Detroit Scandals

Southfield (WWJ)  -- Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm says an FBI investigation into some city council members and the text message scandal in Detroit is "extremely disconcerting and disappointing."

Granholm made the comment to WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick during a Wednesday morning news briefing in Lansing.

When asked about what's going on in Detroit, the governor said she didn't know, but said "it is not good for Michigan."   "The state can't thrive without a thriving city, a big city, Detroit is our big city.  And to the extent that they are experiencing these enormous challenges whether they are ethical or financial, it is not good for Michigan," Granholm said.

Skubick reports the governor was careful not to use a broad brush to paint the entire city in a negative light.

She has been asked by City Council to remove Kilpatrick from office.   An attorney for the Governor gave both sides until early September to file briefs in the case.

Mayor Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff Christine Beatty are charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice in connection with a Whistleblower Act trial.

The Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday four city council members are the target of a federal investigation involving a contract approved for Synagro, a sludge disposal company.

The public corruption investigation involves council members, council aides, other city workers and people who do business with the city.

City Councilwoman Joann Watson called for the contract to be rescinded because of the allegations surrounding the deal.
