Goodfellows Collect $72,631

Detroit (WWJ)  -- Metro Detroiters opened their hearts--and wallets--for others in need this week.

The Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit says it collected $72,631 during Monday's special edition newspaper sale.  That's about $1,600 more than last year.

Detroit police officers lent a big hand, rounding up $40,112.36 of that total, with Goodfellows volunteers soliciting the rest.

"We are truly grateful to the Detroit Police officers who really made all the difference in our Sales Day collections," said Andrea Bronson, 2008 Detroit Goodfellows president.

"And the consistently generous Detroit public once again came through toward helping us make Christmas brighter for 30,000 deserving boys and girls in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park."

The Detroit Goodfellows' goal this year is to raise $1.4 million for the Christmas gift program, as well as its various programs which benefit Detroit children in need. So far, including Sales Day collections, approximately $577,469 has been raised which is 42 percent of the goal.

Tax-deductible donations may be sent to: The Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit, P.O. Box 44444, Detroit, MI 48244-0444. Donations may also be made using the organization's secure website.
