Spring Shape-Up Tips

Detroit (WWJ)  -- So, Spring is here and beach and bikini season is right around the corner. If you're ready to get in shaper for ths summer, here are some ideas to help make your goal become a lasting reality.
  • Get a check-up: Before embarking on any weight-loss plan it’s a good idea to get checked out by a doctor. Make sure to let your doctor know you’re planning to lose weight. Discuss options and what a reasonable weight loss might be for you.
  • Don’t crash diet: That crazy, eat-only-prunes-for-two-weeks diet might take off 15 pounds in short order, but at what cost? You’ll likely feel awful and gain the weight back in no time. What’s more, fad diets can be dangerous. Unless you need to lose weight quickly – for example, for health reasons related to obesity – gradual, healthy weight loss should be the rule.
  • Devise a plan: Think about what will work for you. Do you prefer a program that monitors your progress and provides information and support? Do you like group settings, or do you want to do things on your own? In-person programs, online programs and combinations of both are available. Make sure any program you choose is reputable and has a proven track record for sustainable weight loss.
  • Get moving: Exercise will help you lose weight and help your body function better, too. Your heart, lungs, bones, and immune system will thank you.
  • Change your life: Prepare yourself for a long-term lifestyle change. After all, you want to make this stick. Think smaller portions, better foods, and regular exercise. Don’t “ban” foods you like. Let yourself eat small portions of “bad” foods occasionally.
